The readers are immediately aware that Basil's marriage to Margaret was his undoing, but the events unfold slowly and tragically. I read some poems and wanted to slide down the wall and cry it out. The author does a great job of highlighting major events in the development of Brazil and brings it right up to date but unfortunately from my point of view the way in which the plot is put together as a focus on a few individuals means it was not the book I really wanted. Gemma has the inattentive nature to solve issues that other’s can’t. TOO OVER THE TOP FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT. There were a couple of errors in the French which I did find surprising as the book seems to be so well-researched. This wonderful book has been around for at least 25 years. I calm down within a minute and realize oh, it was another panic attack, I’m alive, nothing to worry about.
